Dr. Minoru Shirota succeeds in culturing Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota at the Universtiy of Kyoto in Kyoto, Japan. This later became the main ingredient in Yakult.

In Southern California and Las Vegas, Yakult sells in its first general market grocery store.
