Dr. Minoru Shirota succeeds in culturing Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota at the University of Kyoto in Kyoto, Japan. This accomplishment makes him the first person to successfully identify and culture a probiotic strain strong enough to survive the body’s harsh stomach acids and reach the intestines alive where it may have beneficial effects on the body. The Shirota strain is the exclusive probiotic strain found only in Yakult products.
